Which is the best HDTV?

LCD projection televisions are widely credited as being the best HDTV on the market. This reputation is based on the fact that they produce the best quality large screen image when measured against other sets. When weighed against DLP sets, LCD is a bit more expensive and a little dimmer. However when it comes to pleasing the eye the LCD wins every time.

The LCD television sets offer the best HDTV quality and performance for their price. The quality in terms of their video dynamic range, black level management and other features is top-notch. In the not-to-distant future new LCD technology like LcOS and DILA are going to be commonplace. They are as good as the current LDC screens.

Direct view LCD is the best HDTV model as far as image quality goes for smaller screen sizes i.e. (42" diagonal and lower). Above 42" there are not many direct view LDS available. This will probably change in the future. Bi screen plasma television will probably give the LCD display a run for its money in the next decade. Experts believe that LCD will outperform plasma as far as performance and price are concerned.

So which LCD display is the best HDTV to buy? LCD HDTV flat panels are thin just like plasma screens and can be mounted on the wall. However the LDC sets are available in a bigger range of sizes. This makes it easier to find one that will suit your budget.

Expert ratings maintain that Sharp offers the best HDTV as far as LCD is concerned. The black levels on Sharp sets are similar to that of a plasma TV. The 37-inch LC-37GD4U boasts some interesting features like detachable speakers, picture-in-picture, adjustable color temperature and a light sensor. The light sensor adjusts the brightness of your image based on the light in the room.

There is no doubt that reviews of HDTV sets can be subjective. But the next time you visit an electronics store I am almost certain your eye will pick out the LCD screen as more pleasing to watch. In my opinion the best HDTV to buy for your money is the flat panel LCD.

A Comparison of Movie Download Services

Over the past two years, we have seen a number of video download services hit the market from major players like Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Netflix. There have also been some new companies entering this category, such as XStreamHD and VUDU. Some are available only via a software client, meaning a PC (or Mac) would be required to enjoy them, while others work with dedicated hardware connected to your TV. They vary in quality, selection, delivery methods and cost and this article will hit the highlights of what each of the major players are offering their would-be customers in this burgeoning market.

Let's set the stage. This article covers products and services that provide movie downloads via the internet. Specifically...

LCD Specs Playing with Your Eyes

A recent question by one of our HDTV Magazine readers regarding LCD was: What does 4ms really mean? And how would that reconcile with the fact that a typical 60Hz frame rate would display each frame every 16ms? (8ms on a 120Hz display).

To accurately respond to these questions would take more than just a few sentences. The answers are not black and white, as I explain in the following article.

There seems to be a contradiction in the way these specs are expressed or interpreted for LCDs, and they are actually two different subjects that interact for the objective of display quality...

Gigabit Communication Challenges Cable Technology: Semiconductors to the Rescue

Multi-gigabit communications present many challenges to cable manufacturers. How can bandwidths higher than 10Gbps required by new standards such as HDMI™ and DisplayPort be achieved over low cost cables? What are the core technical problems with achieving these high data rates and what technologies can be used to address them? How can manufacturers achieve solutions which are less dependent on copper pricing? How can reliability issues be resolved without the need to use thicker cables? Cable manufacturing techniques have evolved to try to meet the challenge, but semiconductor solutions are emerging as promising alternatives and can be expected to play a significant role in solving these issues.

This article explains the physical problems faced by cable manufacturers, in particular...
