| Plasma HDTV - The Advantages of Plasma Television |

HDTV Home > Plasma HDTV Thin and sleek: Plasma HDTVThere are several advantages to buying a plasma HDTV. Plasma television has been on the market since 1999. These televisions offer higher resolution than most regular sets and can display full HDTV and DTV signals. They can also be used with XGA, SVGA and VGA signals from a computer. If you have a plasma display with a 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution you will be able to display images from 1080i and 720p HDTV resolution. Another important advantage of plasma HDTV is that each pixel contains a transistor electrode. This means no scan lines. Your display will thus be smooth and uniformly lit. CRT televisions use electron beams for scanning from top to bottom and these scan lines are visible. The color accuracy on plasma HDTV is excellent. Top models can display 16.77 million colors. This makes colors more realistic and there is less contrast between colors. Plasma television is way ahead of other display types based on color saturation levels. The widescreen aspect ratio on plasma HDTV is 16:9. This is the ideal ratio for HDTV viewing as well as DVD viewing. Plasma HDTV viewing is enhanced by the flat screen. There is no curvature on plasma television sets. Thus there is no edge distortion such as you have with standard CRT television sets. This makes viewing angles easier. Plasma sets are protected by an antiglare Plexiglas layer. Plasma sets feature uniform screen brightness. There are no hot spots when viewing plasma HDTV. These often occur in the middle of the screen or at the corners and edges on some rear and front projection televisions. Plasma pixel displays are lit evenly across the screen. Thus the images appear smoother. When it comes to saving space plasma HDTV is ideal. Plasma televisions are only a few inches in depth. This means it can easily be wall mounted in the most inaccessible places. Depth is at 3.5 inches on 42" displays and 4" for 50" screens. So these TVs can be used on a stand, hung on a wall or from a ceiling and it won't take up floor space. Plasma HDTV is going to look better. Plasma displays feature a 160 degree (top to bottom and left to right) viewing angle. This is far superior to rear projection TVs and LCD displays. More people can watch the screen from more places in the room. Plasma HDTV will not be distorted by magnetic forces of any kind. Plasma televisions are immune to the earth's magnetic fields. This means that speakers cannot distort the picture as they can with a CRT television. With one war over and Blu-ray taking victory, there is yet another war brewing in the background ... or is there? The new question being asked by the rank and file is whether or not there is even a future for packaged media. Can you imagine a day where nobody physically rents a movie? Some are. Historically, this battle has been ongoing via your local cable system or satellite service; it is called Pay Per View (PPV) and Video On Demand (VOD). A recent question by one of our HDTV Magazine readers regarding LCD was: What does 4ms really mean? And how would that reconcile with the fact that a typical 60Hz frame rate would display each frame every 16ms? (8ms on a 120Hz display). To accurately respond to these questions would take more than just a few sentences. The answers are not black and white, as I explain in the following article. There seems to be a contradiction in the way these specs are expressed or interpreted for LCDs, and they are actually two different subjects that interact for the objective of display quality... Ed's View - Hail to the Glitches!
The digital/HDTV transition now in pregress by the television industry is arguably (certainly by that industry) the most complex ever experienced, though likely not since the evolvement of radio communications from Morse coded pulses to commercial broadcast radio. The second in a four-part series of articles on buying an HDTV. The following topics are covered in this segment: Decision to Go with HDTV High Definition Movies Before They Hit Blu-ray? Only if Your HDTV Permits It.
How would you like to view an HD movie at home via Video-On-Demand (VOD) just a few weeks after its theatrical release, even before it's released on DVD and Blu-ray? Maybe your HDTV connections would not let you do it, despite the fact that you paid for the movie. On May 9, 2008, the MPAA issued a petition to the FCC for a waiver of the SOC feature... |
